From 19th to 22 th of November, 2018, there was held the X International Youth Scientific and Practical Congress «Oil and Gas Horizons» inside the walls of the Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas hosted. This year, 80 students and graduate students attended the congress; they were from 29 universities of different 17 countries
The event was sponsored by Schlumberger, PJSC TATNEFT and JSC Rosgeologia. The congress partners were PJSC LUKOIL and the Russian National Committee of the World Petroleum Council. During the opening ceremony there was a greeting speech told by Vice-Rector responsed for Academic Affairs — Vladimir Koshelev, Vice-President for Marketing at Schlumberger — Artem Karapetov, President of SPE International 2018 — Darcy Spady. There also were the head of SPE Regional Projects Francis Avril, Chairman of the SPE Moscow Section Anton Ablayev, Specialist of SPE regional projects -Yaroslava Orlova and the main organizer of this year Congress, Polina Letkova.
The Congress program continued with the plenary session, the main topic of which was “Digitization in the oil and gas industry”. The reports were presented by Schlumberger specialist Alexander Kuvichko, Deputy Director of the Institute for Oil and Gas Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences Nikolai Eremin and President of SPE International Darcy Spady. Then a panel session was held with SPE International President Darcy Spady during which he spoke about his professional path and answered questions from congress participants.
The main event of the congress were in technical sessions holding. The participants presented their reports in 9 sections: Geology and Geophysics; Drilling and rigging; Development of oil and gas fields; Oil and gas chemistry; Industrial and environmental safety; Economics and management in the oil and gas industry; Competition for graduate students; Smart technology in the oil and gas industry. In the foyer of the Palace of Culture «Gubkinets», there was a presentation of poster presentations at which 8 participants presented their works.
The technical sessions were attended by 38 judges, representatives of companies such as Lukoil, Gazprom, Schlumberger, Halliburton, Salym Petroleum, Exxon Neftegaz Limited and others, as well as teachers from Gubkin University.
Also, excursions around the Gubkin University were organized. Participants visited the Mineralogical and Petrographic Museum of L.V. Pustovalov; educational and research laboratory «Hydrochemistry Geochemistry; a modernized computer-training center» Virtual Refinery «; a simulator for drilling wells on land and at sea.
Thanks to the HR training provided by Delloite company, students learned how to better prepare a resume and how to prepare for the most difficult stage when looking for a job — an interview.
During the congress, two games took place in parallel: the economic “Oil Rush” and the intellectual PetroOlympic Games, during which participants both competed in the depths of their knowledge and shrewdness.
At the international and regional round tables, representatives of 17 universities discussed the already established ways of interaction, and also offered new promising ideas for further development of cooperation. After that, Schlumberger conducted a case, thanks to a joint solution of which the students rallied even more and demonstrated good teamwork skills.
In addition, on the 3rd day of the Congress, a Career Opportunity Fair was held, at which congress participants and students of the Gubkin University were able to communicate directly with already established specialists. They were presented such areas of the oil and gas industry as exploration, transportation and logistics of pipelines, industrial safety and environmental protection, drilling , business analysis, commercial analysis and consulting, field development and operation, and human resources. In addition, by members of the Russian National Committee of the World Petroleum Council was presented the event of the 6th Forum of the Future Leaders of the World Petroleum Council.
The closing event of the third day was the Closing Ceremony, where the winners of technical sessions, the intellectual game PetroOlympic Games and the economic game Oil Rush were awarded. The participants were awarded the head of the International Relations Department of the Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas Oleg Isaev; Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics of the Gubkin university, member of the Council of Young Scientists and specialist of JSC Rosgeologiya Ildar Khasanov. There also were the director of recruitment and work with universities in Russia and the CIS countries of Schlumberger Konstantin Mazaev; the chairman of the Moscow Section of the International Society of Oil and Gas Engineers — Anton Ablaev; and Vlada Streletskaya — Chairman of the Student Section of the Moscow Section of the International Society of Oil and Gas Engineers (SPE). The ceremony ended with the words of the SPE Regional Director of the Russian-Caspian Region, Aizhan Dzhusupbekova, and the 2018 SPE President Darcy Spady.
In addition to an extensive official program, there was a rich cultural program organized for the participants of the Congress. During it they were able to get acquainted with the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, visit the viewing platform of the Central Children’s World, the Planetarium, Red Square and the Zaryadye Park, as well as the viewing platform on Sparrow Hills. During the walk, the participants had an active conversation with each other, asked various questions and were in a good mood.
On November 21, in the framework of the congress “Oil and Gas Horizons”, there was a meeting organized with students of Moscow schools within the framework of the Energy4me project. The meeting began with a lecture by Evgeny Vladimirovich Shelyago, a lecturer at the Department of Development and Exploitation of Oil Fields, at which he told the children about oil and gas production. Then, for the first time in the framework of the Congress, students presented their research reports on various topics of the oil and gas industry. The winners received Energy4me corporate books and personal certificates, as well as all the participants were presented with gift sets. In conclusion, the children were given a tour of the University’s training centers.
The year 2018 has become a jubilee year for the “Oil and Gas Horizons”: in its ten-year history, the congress has established itself as one of the main international student research sites of Gubkin University.
